The NDI reaction unit is a specialized, complete chemical processing system specifically designed for synthesizing polyurethane prepolymers and elastomers from NDI and polyols. It is engineered to meet the unique process requirements of NDI, including its high melting point, slow initial reaction followed by intense exothermic behavior, and the high viscosity of the reaction system.

Core Structure and Components
Pretreatment Unit (optional but commonly used): Crushing and screening of flake NDI raw materials, combined with a nitrogen-protected conveying system to reduce high-temperature melting time and suppress self-polymerization side reactions.
Reactor System: Equipped with a thermal oil jacket for rapid heating and cooling, high-temperature and pressure-resistant sealing, and a scraper-type agitator to prevent wall buildup and enhance heat transfer.

Temperature Control System: Dual hot/cold oil tanks with directional valves and a precision temperature control module, enabling initial heating at 120-130 degree C and rapid cooling after exothermic reaction stages.
Vacuum / Inert Gas System: Removes moisture and volatile components while maintaining full-process nitrogen protection to prevent hydrolysis or oxidation of NCO groups.

Feeding / Discharge and Metering System: High-precision metering pumps, sealed feeding ports, and insulated discharge pipelines to prevent NDI crystallization and blockage.
Safety and Off-Gas Treatment: Pressure and temperature interlocks, over-temperature alarms, and an isocyanate exhaust gas absorption system.
Typical Process Flow
The polyol is heated and dehydrated in the reactor (120-130 degree C under vacuum conditions).
Crushed NDI powder or molten NDI is added under nitrogen protection.
The reaction is maintained at a constant temperature in the initial stage; during the mid-stage exothermic phase, the cooling system is rapidly switched on for temperature control.
The reaction proceeds until the target NCO content is reached, followed by a holding (maturation) stage or direct use for casting or foaming.
The final product is discharged, packaged, or transferred to the next processing stage.
